MIST is the Minimum Industry Safety Training course that was introduced to the North Sea in 2009, and is specifically used in the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS), to provide all workers travelling offshore with basic safety awareness, in order to reduce the risk of accidents and injury. An OPITO-approved standard, the Atlas Knowledge training has been undertaken by more than 122,000 workers.
The online refresher course can be completed at any time and in any location, as long as there is an internet connection. You are not restricted to complete the course in one sitting as your progress will be saved as you go through the course. This means you can exit out and log back in at a later date to complete the course from where you left off. You will need to have this completed before you go offshore. The requirements for completing MIST Online are as follows:
- You must have a valid Vantage POB number
- You must hold a valid Survival Certificate (e.g. BOSIET or FOET)
- You must have worked offshore (UK or International) within the past 4 years
If you do not meet the above criteria then you should enrol for the 2-day classroom version of the course. You can find your local training provider at www.opito.com. If you are unsure whether to do the online or classroom course, contact your employer or the operator of the asset you will be visiting/working on and they will be able to advise you further.
If you have previously done the MIST 2-day classroom course and it is now due to expire following 4 years' validity, then you are also eligible to do the MIST online refresher course.
The five modules covered in MIST are:
Major Accident Hazards
Work Hazards and Personal Safety
Control of Work
